Not really - separately stories- the only thing that really links them is the setting. IT would help but you probably won't miss out on much.

Are games like this pretty much the same on PS3 and X360 now - can you tell the difference?

yeah, the ps3 has caught up with the xbox now in terms of what the developers can do with it.

Some game sites try to show the difference using side-by-side comparisons but can only really tell the difference if you know what you are looking for.
