Gday all,

Word is this year may be an El Nino year? Anyone out there know how this impacts / has impacted historically on the snow in our beloved Japan?

If the last El nino was 2006 - if you read the archives it was a HUGE year 4.85mt base with 30-40cm average. Wasn't the 2005/06 season the one everyone still talks about??

WOW if that is what happens in El Nino BRING IT ON!!! veryshocked

I remember 2005/06. I went up to Hokkaido to ski on a three-meters base in December which was awsome but I could have stayed in south-western Japan coz they had at least that much pretty much everywhere.
But don't listen to me, I live on Shikoku <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/shifty.gif

05/06 in the Yuzawa area was ridiculous.. it didn't stop snowing.. the snowfall levels were evident from the amount of snow piled up on the side of the streets.

....as were the levels this last season with the almost complete lack of snow piled up on the side of the roads!

Lets hope we get another 05/06 like season

Just an idiot question?? What caused the 05/06 season?? Was this considered normal for Japan or Above Normal?

Not sure on your links policy. Sorry if I'm being naughty.

The link below is the article suggesting this year will be an El Nino year.

I would believe we are going into an El Nino as the weather has been totally spassy lately.

Today is a balmy 26oC and it is the middle of winter - last week was cold with rain - weekend is windy and cold and then we seem to be back to above normal winter temps. wakaranai

Who cares as long as Japan has BIG DUMPS of snow!!

We've certainly had lots of dry and warm, up until this past two weeks when it has been seriously dumping rain. seems quite el nino like to me...

Yes, thanks for asking.
We had a 70cm dump in the Australian snow fields over the past couple of days. Not a lot by Japanese standards but the folks down here are very pleased.
