Yeah .. Pete...what is with a lot of places NOT having a clock!! I usually have to check the time on my mobile phone.
ohhh...that is going to be one pain about this place just realized) - phone reception - I needed to go out onto the road to pick it up - I wonder if there is an aerial you can buy that will amplify the signal into the apartment?..
It has been 2 years of looking at properties in both Thredbo (and surrounds) and Niseko, but we are finally writing cheques so it will happen ... always takes longer than you think though, doesn't it!

If you dont mind sharing MB, what tipped the decision to Thredbo?

I have been asked that question a lot Pete,
Why Thredbo...
Firstly, let me say that the first purchase (much as I LOVE Hokkaido) was going to be in Australia. There a a HEAP of reasons for that.
We have been to a few other resorts - among them Perisher, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham, but we are hooked on Thredbo.
The ambiance of the village, the terrain, and the access are big positives for us. But more than anything is the friendships we have made with other Thredbo devotee's or people living/working in the area.
It is just SO easy to get to Thredbo from Perth. An afternoon flight, a night in a Canberra hotel (coz I would prefer NOT to compete with the Kangaroo's on the drive up there) - and then a 2.5 hr drive on awesome roads and you are there.
The property is in Crackenback Ridge which is out of the bustle of the village, but a nice walk to and from the restaurants and bars (we feel very pious when we walk uphill after a big meal). It is also only 50m from access to the Supertrail - pretty close to ski in and ski out.
I have criticisms of Thredbo - I am not one eyed, but the good FAR outweighs the bad for us. The biggest drawback I see is the small beginner area of Friday Flat - it is far too crowded and dangerous with all those out of control newbies, and no snowplay area's - sledding or tubing etc. But I am quite happy to drive family and friends around to Perisher for those things.

You guys are to funny!
Let us buy the shack and fix it up - then we will talk about rolling out an extra bed for some poor snow starved SJers in search of lodging

Nice place, not noisy.

I've not read the thread, but is this the same thread as the other thread about accomodation?

sort of ... I suppose Thursday, but I was hoping to elicit more specific things that people really love to find in their accommodation, rather than the obvious price, location close to snow...
Stuff like: extra doona's, spare pillows in varying softness, for self catering - a slow cooker, for entertainments - board games... that kind of thing.

you gotta say location. My expectations of Thailand would be sooooo much different for Tokyo, New York, Niseko.....
So is this a snow thing or other?

SNOW...
Ok... I know location is everything. But I have the location....now I am making lists of jobs to do and things to buy to fit the place out to be the best place it can be for a snow holiday.
Do you want somewhere to hang your ski's when you go to the snow Thursday?
Is it important to you that you can dry your wet soggy gear?
Do you want a bucket, spade and plastic sled so junior can play in the snow?

That is important. This would go along with an area to tune up your Board.

Yes add sled
All those little extras you add will surely improve the guests experiences, unfortunately they are unlikey to care to much about keeping them in good condition. All the other things you mention are very important in my book to MB

All right, JA was right, I'll never complain about my 2.5 hr drive again!
The suggestion for board games, playing cards, etc. was a good one. Plus onsen or hot tub. Washlet. Alarm clock. And (you knew this was coming) pet facilities! If you don't want to allow pets in the rest of the unit, consider having at least a collapsible cage that can be set up in the entryway, or allow visitors to bring their own cages.
Some day it would be nice to check out the skiing in Australia.

Not sure about for going on a ski holiday, but there is definitely a need for places that cater for pets.

MB, nice one - I'm very envious of course.
I love thredbo, and would love a little shack there too, but the ones we like are around the +$1M mark and a bit out of our range just now!
Crackenback Ridge is a nice spot, and the hike back afterwards is fun eh!!
