The Sea water is nice. The old wooden houses have lots of character.
The surf north of itohgawa can be world class during a northernly blow. The JHS right on the beach would be a great place to go to school.

That southern seaside corner of Niigata is definitely the worst part of the ken. In terms of looks of course.
Will be interesting to see how the Shinkansen affects the Joetsu Shink.

What surprises me most about the shinkansen is the lack of regional goods i.e. beer and snacks that are sold on them.

Between Nagano and Kanazawa, a mighty 2% of the Shinkansen line is on the ground. 44% of it is through tunnels.

Itoigawa-Kanagawa IS the major one.
