Beautiful weather from early on this morning both here in Minamiuonuma and also over in Gunma.

So I was off to one of my favourite skijos for photos - Tanigawa Tenjindaira in Minakami, Gunma. About 50 minutes drive from where I live.

Beautiful clear blue skies. Got on the Gondola at 6am and arrived at the top at 9am. Just kidding. Took some knitting to amuse myself on the ride up.

Had a bit of a panic when I was trying to get a shot just beyond a rope. Bending down and my camera bag was open. 2 lens roll out of bag and one of them starts going down a rather steep area. I thought it was a gonner. Went into a bit of a panic and lost my balance in this rather dangerous position. Luckily I didn't slip in the wrong place and luckily the lens stopped and so I was just about able to rescue it. But it took a while to get composure back, pretty scary.

You'll see one some of those photos people hiking up. Must say, the thought scares me. I'll just take photos of them!

Totally stunning place. I think I said that last year. I just love the scale of the scenery. Unfortunately scaling photos down to small jpgs really takes away lots of the impact of this place.

Check out all the 'little people'!

Here's a couple larger ones that SJ kindly said ok.

If you want to see any others "bigger" let me know which one and I'll save it bigger.

The photos of the trails don't have anyone in them, was this just luck or was the place deserted?

I'm so unbelievably jealous I've been staring at Tanigawa and Hotaka the last view days contemplating faking a flu to get my self up there! I might have even climbed Tanigawa in the morning and boarded in the afternoon. Beautiful pics! every time I go to Tanigawa I send your links to my family to show them how beautiful it is. Thank you!!!!

Tenjin doesn't even have that many people on weekends let alone weekdays. You can also print a coupon of their website for 3,000 yen full day pass! The only negative about Tenjin is the previously mentioned notoriously slow rope way, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives. First skijo I ever went to in Japan and still one of my favorites

Beautiful.

Are most of the hikers just there to hike, or are they skiing/boarding? Don't see too many ski/board tracks coming down from that seemingly well-hiked ridge. Or do they come down somewhere not visible?

Probably 98% of the people who climb the mountain are doing just that. They may come back to the skijo and board/ski after that, but most are there to climb the mountain. I have seen a couple of lines coming off the peak on the left in the first pic from this thread, but I would be scared to try it. The av danger is probably low, but if it went I don't anything would save you.

Great pics! It didn't look like that when I was there a few weeks ago - blowing a gale and couldn't see anything!! Shame cos I really wanted to try some of those runs through the trees.....

Got to be one of the most spectacular settings for a skijo here.

Great photos, and glad to hear everything was okay. Don't risk your life big man, not even for a pro lens!

It looks like you took all three, so that's quite some gear to be carrying and juggling around with cases and caps and ski poles and things.

Thanks folks.
It's difficult to take bad pictures up there, camera eats it up!
Yes I'll take the 12-24, 24-70 and 70-200 to places like Tenjin. Better than going and regretting not having them.
The lens was covered in snow when I recovered it. It seems to be ok. I'll have to check out out. Good job they are built sturdy!
