I just read the following in a Chamonix thread on here, talking about the French resort.

I don't have a whole lot of experience in Japan, so I'm wondering what the reasons for all the ropes and no-go areas here is? (If someone goes out and has an accident, does the resort have to take some responsibility for that?)

Depends on the resort, for some it's because of lifts (there was a thread on this somewhere), for some it's due to legit concerns about large amounts of snow etc, for others it's because their paranoid.

I have no idea about their responsibility (either legal or moral)

There are many no-go area in European resorts for the same reasons Sava gives. the difference is that unless you don't do crazy things you can get away with it.
This might be changing though. 10 years ago most people kept to the slopes in Europe but with more snowboarders and wider skis more and more people try to experience the powder. If this continues and casualties rise the resorts will have to do something about it, but until that happens ...

On the question of responsibility, here's a story about some Koreans getting rescued at Zao but seemingly not making any effort to pay up, at least not at first.

I don't know how it all works but I heard about someone recently who fell over on a rock (within a course) at a resort and had to have some treatment done - and it's in court with the resort probably having to cough up.

Yup, some good points in it that seem to get repeatedly brought up.

You notice how the more peeps sign up the more the same Q's get brought up? A quick search and you can find most anything.
