SNOW JAPAN FORUMS GENERAL GUIDELINES

Thank you for using the Snow Japan Forums. We hope you'll find both the Forums and the Snow Japan site in general to be a really fun place as well as being a big help in you getting the most out of the Japanese winter.

Since we went online in 1999, each season we see a healthy increase in the number of people using Snow Japan and the Forums. We really value the way the Forums and the community that has developed around them has grown over recent years and believe that they are one of the best communities out there.

We thank everyone who joins in and contributes to making it what it is.

About our guidelines & the way we run these Forums
We have never taken a very heavy-handed approach to moderating these Forums and happily that has not really been necessary, but we do have Forum guidelines and each year they have developed from our experiences of running the site and the Forums. There is reasoning and careful thought put behind every guideline that we have in place. They are all there for a reason and we feel that the guidelines and policies we have are there for the long-term benefit of the Forums - and most of the members using them.

Of course, posts on the Forums include a lot of differing opinions and each member is certain to find opinions that they disagree with and may even find offensive. We try to be as fair as we possibly can be when moderating but with so many different viewpoints, there are inevitably going be some people that will not be happy with our policies. We regret this, but understand that we simply cannot please all people all the time and we have to make decisions based on what we feel is best for the Forums in the long run.

We do not want to delete or touch any of the posts on the Forums. The only thing that does for us is create a problem. Having to deal with these issues also takes up a considerable amount of our time. This is time which would otherwise be spent developing and improving the site in general for the benefit of everyone.

With so many posts on the Forums, there may be times when we are less than 100% consistent or we may well miss something. We do what we can to make sure that we are as consistent as possible but if anyone feels that we have missed something that needs to be dealt with, then we invite you to contact us and bring it to our attention. (There's a 'Report Post' link at the bottom of each post).

When we do take any action on 'borderline' issues, we have a lot of information that we use to assess each instance - including IP addresses, email addresses, post activity, past posts, login details and more. These details are not apparent to the general public using the Forums. We also take into account any recent issues with a particular member - if they have been consistently breaking our guidelines - either intentionally or not - then we may be less lenient with them.

We will be more lenient and communicative with long-term members than with new members. However, a members number of posts does not signify any kind of authority over others and this does not give anyone any licence to flaunt our guidelines more than anyone else.

It really depends on each instance, as the circumstances are always different. All of this information we have lets us see 'the bigger picture' surrounding an issue and it often sheds light on things that are not apparent by simply reading online posts.

There is a huge amount of information to be found on the pages of Snow Japan and the Forums - ranging from basic information for each resort, feature articles and interviews to a huge library of information that has been submitted by our readers. So before posting a new general question, please try to check out the site and these Forums to make sure that the answer to your question isn�t already there!

You will very probably find the Snow Japan Forum experience to be a fun and informative experience. In order to be able to enjoy using the Forums and join in the community here, please read the following rules and guidelines:


REGISTRATION:
One of the reasons that we require you to register before you can post is so that we can try to keep troublemakers away from the Forums as much as possible. It's not always easy to do that but we certainly try to give people the benefit of the doubt. But when you register, please refrain from putting Nationality as "Martian", location as "Making sausages" or other such 'witty' comments on the form - you simply won't get your registration approved if you do that. It's not that we don't have a sense of humour - we do, honest! - it's just we're trying to maintain the quality of the forums and that's not the best way to introduce yourself.

For similar reasons, another thing that we ask new users to refrain from is trying to register multiple times using different usernames. It looks suspicious and the registrations will more than likely not get approved.


PRIVATE MESSAGES:
In an effort to avoid spammers signing up to our forums solely for the purpose of using the Private Messaging (PM) functionality to spam members, when you first sign up to the forums the Private Message functionality is not immediately available to you.... you need to make some posts on the forums before you can use our PM's.

If you find yourself having made lots of posts but PMs are still not available to you, please email us to let us know and we'll look into it.

Do not use the PMs for the purposes of promoting any business, services or events. The same "no advertising" rules that apply to the main Forums also applies to Private Messages.


ADVERTISING OR PROMOTIONS ARE NOT ALLOWED:
We do not allow any kind of advertising, business promotion, classifieds or jobs available listings on the Forums; whether it be a blatant ad or a sneaky try to get your info out there. If you post something that we consider to 'cross the line', we might delete it. If such a post is your first post and blatant, we may also put the account on hold or delete it.

If you are interested in promoting something to our large readership, please contact us and we can discuss it. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.


EMAIL ADDRESSES:
Please do not post your personal email address on the Forums. Amongst other things, you might find that you will suddenly be on the receiving end of spam if you do so. If you really need to contact someone urgently and have no other way to do so, please contact us and we will help.


WHY WAS MY POST DELETED?
It is still rare that we delete or edit posts - we really do not want to be in the position of having to do that as it often causes us more problems than it solves. However if we do take any such action, we do so because we feel we have good reason to so please do not repost or post a new thread or replies questioning our actions.

There are certain subjects that we simply do not want to be discussed on these Forums and if they appear they will be deleted.


CHAT BOX
The Chat Box is a fun new addition to the Forums. However, we ask that it not be abused and will be strict with members who do so. Please click here for more information on our Shout Box policy.


LINKS TO OUTSIDE WEBSITES:
Please do not treat these Forums as simply a convenient place to spread the word about other websites - whether the website be your own or one that you have nothing to do with.

Links to outside non-commercial websites within relevant discussions are sometimes acceptable, but posts of the nature 'This is a cool site, check it out (insert URL here)' are not allowed - however well-meaning the intention. Please also refrain from posting threads simply with a link on it's own without any explanation.

While we try to be as consistent as possible with decisions regarding any links posted on the Forums, we may - for whatever reason - decide to delete a link that has been posted.

ABUSING/INSULTING OTHER MEMBERS OR COMPANIES:
Occasionally there have been times where people have started hurling abuse and insults at other members or even businesses. That kind of thing does not belong on these Forums.

If we feel that someone goes too far in this respect, we will (without warning) take away their posting rights on the Forums for a period of time that we see fit.

If anyone feels they have something to report to us, just mail us at the usual address or click on the �Report Post� link you can find under every post.


ACCEPTING THE ACTIONS OF SJ MODERATORS:
As mentioned above it is still rare that messages and threads get deleted or closed by the moderators of these Forums considering the size of these Forums. However, if a thread or post is edited/deleted/closed by SJ Moderators, it is done because we feel that there is a good reason for that to happen and only after careful thought and considering our own guidelines. We ask that you accept any such decisions and do not post a new thread or messages questioning those decisions and our general policies. We will generally not discuss these issues or our policies on the Forums in public and we will delete any threads and posts discussing these policies. You are of course welcome to contact us by email if you have any questions or problems but we might not respond to simple "why did you delete my post" mail. The answer to that question can generally be found in this thread and the Links Policy thread (see above).

We really do not take too well to members - especially newcomers - posting overly sarcastic comments about our policies online, so don't expect such comments to remain.

The bottom line - if you simply cannot accept our policies, our decisions or the way we run things, then please just refrain from posting on these Forums.

Please note the following:

Our policies are not up for discussion on the Forums. That includes sarcastic and criticisms of our policies. If you feel you must contact us to complain about any specific incident, you can email it to us, but do not post it on the Forums. It will be deleted. Apart from the fact that we do not feel we need to explain or defend everything we do in front of thousands of people, we also simply do not have the time to do so and would prefer to spend the time we do have to improve the site.

We are not going to engage in extended general discussion of our main policies via email, for the same reason as above.

If you plan to email us, please note that we do not reply to offensive, insulting and sarcastic e-mails. Such correspondence gets ignored. Any person who finds it necessary to send such mails to us might also find themselves banned from the Forums.

If your post or thread gets deleted, please do not start a new thread or re-post asking why it was deleted or comment about it in another thread. It will be deleted (and it will annoy us as the same time!)

If we have to delete 3 posts by any one member within a period of one day, that member will get their posting rights taken away from them without warning.

Do not try to play a game with us, 'push us', test our resolve or insult the Moderators online. If you persist, you run the risk of us taking away your posting rights without warning.

All decisions as to what is considered borderline, offensive, insulting, unsuitable, troublemaking, advertising, etc will be made by the Moderators of these Forums.
