yeah just got back from whistler... backcountry there is so massive. you could tour those glaciers for years and still have no real clue how much is out there.

Unlike Japan the backcountry is pretty much always fairly crowded so if you expect to get super virgin snow on a sunny day then you're probably out of luck, but the good part is that there are skin tracks everywhere. And if you get lost (like i did multiple times) there is always someone around to help you out.

On a side note, I bit the bullet and bought a splitboard.
