I have already been hit by a shark so my odds are pretty good at not getting hit again.
.
C.mon....Tell us the story then. I was waiting for this.. lol.. Well i was out surfing at a noreast beach about 60 k north of you around may or june. The mullet were running at the time so it was a really stupid thing to do. I was out the back with a yank guy and all of a sudden i turned and saw this massive shape coming up out of the water at me. It was a ten foot bronze whaler. It had a huge massive head and just hit my board from the bottom and rolled me over. The shark went over the top of my board and swam away. Its teeth just managed to nick the wetsuit leg. whew! lucky hey. I started to swim in and left the board out there. I later swam back out to get it. The yank guy had paddled straight in.. My board had these two sets of teeth marks on the bottom. It was a crap board anyway.. I do not hate sharks. It is their ocean and we are going into their territory so we have to cop it sweet if they want to give us a touch up.. imho.. the end.

do you get many abalone where you are? I love a nice fresh abalone with butter and garlic - thin sliced and fried just right.. *drools*
There's load of Abalone around here at the moment. We are at the end of a 5 year ban, the stocks have recovered well. The ban is for south of Yacaba only, so up that way it's fine. You can still take 10 per person. I don't mind abs on the BBQ, with lemon pepper butter....mmmmm.

Sorry Indo. Ohhh, that's ENOUGH! The right is siiiick. Plenty of abs where I'm from and oysters too. Not like those little ones you boys get up there! My wife reckons I'm wasting the abs on t5he barbie, she loves em fresh. (about the only thing I don't love as sashimi.

You mean like this ... yes, that is the one.. broke a board there.. We got heaps of great waves there. no photos but.. just memories.. I wonder if there are any abs around newie? Are you allowed to get them there? I got a hankering for some fresh seafood. Do you have pots or just grab the lobsters? My mate used to do the rockies with about a dozen or so little pots from his tinny. I used to work the lobster traps out at sea. We went to the edge of the continental shelf about 20 miles out or so. Sometimes you would steam out there for hours and the current had all the buoys under so you would have to just go back home again without pulling a single trap.. Indo, how did the martial arts tournament go? What style do you do?

Just out of curiosity. What would these go for $$$$. We are talking 800 grams of fine Eastern Rock Lobster, fresh from the sea (not tank). From kicking to licking....... 1 hour. Mantas, I like mine a little bigger than that, perhaps twice as big sashimi. They prob go for 40 USD each

Those southern abs are the best. Big too. Green lip aren't they? The No Take is still in force south of Yacaba (Hawks nest) to Eden. North of that your fine. 10 per day per person. Size limits of course. My mate who lives up the street is a professional ab diver. He's been doing research for fisheries around here. There are thousands of them out here. Every time I've had them, it's always been a slap up BBQ affair and there is always an 'expert' on hand to give some 'good advice'. I'd love to try some that have been cooked up by a top notch Jap chef. I don't know if I'd pay $100 US for the privilege though. Those Lobsters (or crayfish) are typical of around here. Occasionally you get them over 1 kg. The big ones, about 2-3 kg, are out on the shelf. Yes we grab them with a gloved hand Koko. Fun and games that. Sticking you whole arm to the armpit down a dark crack full of all sorts of creatures.

Is that a Moreton Bay lobster?? The crays we have in Kiwi are orange? The uncles used to dive for them when we were kids and the older bros used to raid cray pots. Nowadays, the abalone (paua) belong to the Maori pretty much.

This thread is better than the cho yummy thread. Abalone, lobsters, this is what seafood is about.
when I visit Australia, every meal will be lobster and abalone with some bubbly. Bubbly !!........VB mate......VB. There are dozens of different species of crayfish in Australia, They vary slightly as you go around the coast line. The southern crays are way more tasty than their northern cousins. This is due to the fact that the northern warm water crays, painted and coral crays, are vegetarian. So the crays that you are likely to see in places like Bali and Thailand, whilst looking impressive, really don't taste too good. Lobster is an American crayfish with claws. I don't know why people call our crayfish lobsters.
