isn't active d-lighting just adding effects to your photo incamera? You should do that on a computer anyways.

cmos vs ccd.....can you really notice?
to get 8fps you need to buy the new battery grip and use aa batteries otherwise it's only 6.5pfs

100 shot cache....when are you going to take 100 shots in a row?

12mega pixels vs 10 is not noticeable

yes, the d300 is an improvement over the d200 but you've got to cut through the marketing crap to see if it's really for you.

BP why would you get a d200 over a d80?

I run out of the 25 frame cache quite often when I try to catch the best smile. 100 cache is more like it.

I dunno kuma. As I said, I haven't looked at the cameras much. Why would I go a d80?

Ken has this to say

"Nikon D80: Old news. Things change fast in 2007; it's not 1997 anymore.

My D80 is great, just that's not much better than my D40 and not much less expensive than a new D200. I prefer the ligher weight and better switches of my new D40, and I can get two D40s for the price of a D80.

The D80 didn't get worse; the new D40 got better for half the price and skunked the D80. That's the way technology works.

My D80 was hot when it came out, but for me it sits in the middle between my D200 and D40. If I want small and light I grab my D40. If I'm serious, the D200's meter makes all the difference."

:P no reason. just making you think

d80 still has the scene modes which is handy when getting someone to take your photo ie on vacation
d200 just has p/a/s and m , and it's bigger/heavier

Kuma,
that 100 cache is at normal, large using Extreme IV CF. I shoot fine large and that comes out at 3meg per shot. So that cuts it to 50 for me I guess.

If you're shooting RAW at fine large that's over 10meg per image. So that would cut the 100 by 3.

Just estimating.

BP,

when I picked up the D80, it felt plasticky. Then I picked up the D200 and it felt solid and built for its purpose. That did it for me.

I'm gonna have to go and actually have a look. But is it much heavier Thursday? I'm also gonna have a look at the canons (don't shoot me!)

Kuma I never use anything other than the p/a/s/m mode. Not even when others are shooting for me. I just lock it into p.

the d300 viewfinder is pretty good - 100% coverage!

I personally don't like the p mode on the d200. I liked it on the d50 though...but I didn't know jack then

D80 is 585g, the D200 is 830g

Noticeable difference.

And looking at other cameras is a good move. You'd appreciate the Nikon even more.

kitamura lists the d200 at around 16 man for the body only right now. I am guessing that will slide quite a bit when the d300 comes out. I dunno about the d80.

Kuma's the kit man. He'll be able to get the D200 for much less now.

I think D300 is a huge improvement over D200. First of all the new autofocus system is the same as in the pro model. great for action photography. The bigger buffer is needed when shooting action with raw. And finally with a CMOS that probably better will match Canons noise levels.

That's still a good price now!

BP - If you want to upgrade to a D200, I might be interested in your D70 body (due to it's cost-cutting design it has the quirk of being able to flash sync at any shutter speed).

Damn, I wish I bought the mint condition FM2 that I saw in spring.

Time to switch from Pentax to Nikon, I think. In the UK Ebay is flooded with so many dirt cheap Pentax prime lenses - like less than 20,000 for F2.8 smc lenses, which are good lenses, but in Japan there are so many amateur film photo buffs that Pentax lenses are actually hard to get hold of. Nikon lenses seem to be the cheapest as there are most of them.

I took a few shots at a gig last night, but you'll have to wait till I finish the roll of film... and buy a scanner, ha ha ha!
