As a side trip this year my gf and I were going to go visit Takayama.
Anyone have any recommendations on ryokan/lodgings.

Last year the Missus & I stayed a couple of nights at Minshuku Kuwataniya it was about Y10,000 for 2 incl B/F Phone: 052-541-1121
Good size rooms, central & onsen.

The best thing we did was to head up the hills to stay in a Gassho Ryokan - Hida Gassho-en (Gassho-zukkuri). Old, tall "A" frame, thatched roof houses. Cost about Y12,000 + Y10,000 for dinner. It was excellent. A real step back in time experience & not far from the Gassho Village - worth a visit at night when it's all lit up.
There is a big festival around 24th Jan when Takayama goes off each year. This doesn't suit your timing but maybe next time....

takayama i like. isn't 052 the area code of nagoya tho.
