It sure was. There's a few worn out looking 10pin places in my town. They look totally miserable. Rumor has it that one of them actually still opens on weekend.

Same here. Sad looking places, stuck in the 80's look to them. Good fun though I sometimes enjoy a night out bowling.

Bowling is very popular here. Even development clubhouses have 4 lanes. Never though of it as a real passtime though. Certainly no substitute for skiing

Melbourne had a few new bowling alleys/Bar/nightclubs open up a few years ago. It was pretty good to hang out and have a few bevies, smash a few pins and get some eye candy. Pretty much covers all bases.

A big one in Yokohama, Hama Bowl, a massive 50 lane place with batting cages, was also knocked down a few months back :'(

10 pin was huge. Obviously very different to winter sports in so many ways, but as a boom/fad - huge. Agree that lots of the places look like they are caught in some kind of time warp now but one near me has actually had a madeover and is shiny and new right now, and quite popular as well.

Can hardly be compared can it. Other than the Japanese love of "fads".

I really notice number of people on slope is decrease by large amount. When I first went it was so crowded. Now so different, sometimes I wish more people there!

I've been here a while and seen a lot of changes - other than less people on the slopes (good for the people on them), most have unfortunately been tales of cutbacks and emptiness. It makes me sad. There is hope though, lets hope the fuel thing doesn't mess it all up.

I'm planning a trip to Japan this winter and can't wait to check things out myself. Less busy sounds good to me.

Let's planning as they say.

It is good, though one or two times this last season places were a little toooo empty for my liking. (I wondered if I would ever be found if I had an accident!)
